What is Newspapers In Education (NIE)?
NIE is a cooperative effort between area schools, business partners, and The Akron Beacon Journal to promote the use of the newspaper as a tool for instruction. Under the program, local sponsors contribute funds to supply copies of teh newspaper as a tool for instruction. Under the program, local sponsors contribute funds to supply copies of the newspaper to schools for use in their classrooms. NIE provides teacher-education programs and offers curriculum materials to help schools use the newspapers as a meaningful resource for student learning. Newspapers can be used as a learning tool in every subject area and at every grade level. Our goal is to increase literacy and citizenship and help create more successful students in our communities!
Hundreds of local teachers have used the NIE program for years, and interest has never been higher than it is now. Teachers area looking for timely and creative materials that meet content-area objectives. Newspapers meet those needs.
